Gummy Bear Science

Last Friday, my scientist Dad and I conducted a science experiment to see how fast a gummy bear dissolves in different liquids.

Our Materials

  • Gummy Bears
  • A glass of cold Coca-Cola
  • A glass of boiling water
  • A glass of ice water
  • A glass of white vinegar
  • A glass of hot tap water
  • A ruler
  • A timer

Our Hypothesis

Boiling water will dissolve gummy bears the best.

Our Experiment

We measured 5 gummy bears to determine their size.  We then assigned one gummy bear to one liquid, submerged the gummy bear in the liquid, and timed how long it took for the gummy bear to dissolve.  If the gummy bear was not completely dissolved by the end of 10 minutes, we removed the bear from the liquid and took a final measurement.

Observations and Data

All of the gummy bears measured 2 cm before being placed in a liquid.

Boiling Water: After 1:30 the gummy bear was completely dissolved.

Cold Coca-Cola: After 10:00 the gummy bear did not change in size.

Vinegar: After 10:00 the gummy bear decreased in size by .1 cm.

Hot Tap Water: After 10:00 the gummy bear decreased in size by .2 cm.

Ice Water: After 10:00 the gummy bear did not change in size.

Conclusions

We concluded that boiling water is the most effective way to dissolve a gummy bear.  We were surprised that the chemicals in the Coca-Cola did not have an effect on dissolving the gummy bear.

  1. cool, eva!! hailey had a doctor's appointment so she's sitting beside me checking out all the great stuff you are doing on your blog. i love how you used the scientific method and carefully recorded your results. i'm surprised also about the coke...i would have thought it was more lethal to gummi bears. hmmm. :)
