Drama Queen - A Superhero Story

I had another writing assignment from this book by Rebecca Olien, which I highly recommend.  The book is full of fun writing prompts and story ideas.  My job this time was to create a superhero and write about her superpowers.  Here's the finished product:

Meet Swan.  She is the daughter of the Sun and Moon.  At age sixteen million, she wanted to leave the Solar System and go to Earth.

Her parents gave her powers and sadly let her go.  When on Earth, she became irresistible, almost.  She had long flowing brown hair, deep blue moon dust eyelids, sea green eyes, and cherry red lips.  She wore a sea green dress that hid her legs and gave her the ability to fly.

Now you’re probably wondering what powers the Sun and Moon gave Swan before letting her go.  They highlighted some of her natural abilities and gave her the superhero name of, Drama Queen, because she is very good at acting.  On top of drama, her other powers are invisibility, super speed, and plasma ray.

Swan turned on the news (superheros need to know what is going on in the city).   “There is a fire downtown. Four children and their mom are stuck on the 8th floor!” exclaimed the news reporter.

Swan put on her special flying dress and zoomed through the air to the burning building.  She went in through the back door so she would not have a big crowd around her.  When she got in, she felt the hot fire; she flew as fast as she could could to the 8th  floor.  All of the family was huddling  in the corner behind the mom.

First Swan did some drama, acting like a silly clown, to get them all to stop quivering and to smile.  Then she used super speed to put the fire in the room out, like when a normal person blows out a candle.   And finally she used plasma ray to blast the roof off and fly each of them down to the ground, where she became invisible so as to not spill the beans about her identity.

Her work was done for today.  The family was safe.  As she flew home, she whispered to herself, “A beautiful defeat.”  Such a dramatic line.  The End.

Race to Castle Enchantment

My assignment was to make a map and then write a story about how my main character gets through the places on the map to where the story ends.  So without further ado this is...

Race to Castle Enchantement

“Where am I?” muttered Sharlet.

There are four figures standing over her saying stuff like:

“It can’t be true!”  

“It’s not possible!” 

“What if the rulers find out there’s a human in our world?”

“Then we’re dead!  That’s what!”

“GET AWAY!” screamed Sharlet.  Suddenly, all four figures screamed and ran for their lives. Then Sharlet’s eyes focused and she saw. . . a two headed troll, a fairy the size of a pinky, and a giant talking, walking SUNFLOWER. 

“Where am I and what am I doing here?” demanded Sharlet.  The giant sunflower walked forward and said, “You are in the dream universe of Lake Beauty, and you need to leave!  Humans are not allowed here!”

“Well how do I leave Dirt Face?” argued Sharlet.  The sunflower did not like that one bit, but she still answered.  “You need to get to Castle Enchantment and open the door to the human world or else our entire universe will cease to exist!”  Everyone gasped!

“Well how did I get there Petal Brain?” asked Sharlet. This time the fairy answered because the sunflower was now violet with anger.   “Here, let me draw up a map,” said the fairy.  

                                                                   

“Well let’s see, first the Forest of Fears, then the Maze of Truth, after that the Cave of You’re Not Good Enough, and last, Lake Anger - then after all of that, you will reach Castle Enchantment,” the fairy said. “Well, what are we waiting for?” asked Sharlet. “WE! That is not happening,” said the sunflower.

“Fine. I guess that I will just stay here,” said Sharlet. “Fine. We will help you, but first everyone has to agree,” said the sunflower.  “Fine with me,” said the fairy.  “Well ok,” mumbled the right head of the troll.  “Hhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllloooooooooooo,” said the left one, who happened to be drooling.

“By the way we haven’t told you our names.  The right head of the troll is Nick, the smart one, and the one on the left is Rick, the not so smart one. The fairy is Main, and I am Sun,” said the sunflower.  “Well what are we waiting for? The Forest of Fears is only ten minutes away,” said Nick. “Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,” said Rick.

Ten minutes later, Sharlet was at the Forest of Fears. As Sharlet looked over it, all she saw was a normal forest, but then she walked in and the sunlight was gone and so was the entrance, plus everyone else had just disappeared.  She heard them, but she could not see them.  Suddenly her fears seemed to be growing and she felt as if the life was being sucked out of her.  And it was.

Sharlet’s skin was getting white and wrinkley.   Her eyes suddenly felt like they wanted to close to escape the fears of the forest.  Then she heard a shout, “Don’t let the forest scare you!  It just makes you weaker!” screamed a mystery someone.  Sharlet took the stranger’s advice and she started to gain her courage back slowly, but then her greatest fear came out from behind the tree.  GHOSTS.

Sharlet screamed at the top of her lungs, then something swooped down from a tree and pulled her out on the other side of the forest. “Are you crazy?” demanded an enchanted boy who looked about 13 and was kinda cute.  “I am Sharlet, and I am trying to get to Castle Enchantment,” panted Sharlet.  The boy turned to Sun, Main, Nick, and Rick, who were all getting up from the pile they were in.

“Sun, you are taking a human girl through the top four obstacles? ARE YOU CRAZY!”  “Yes I am, Prince Tom,” said Sun.  “But you know the rules!  No humans allowed in our universe or we will be destroyed.  She must pass through the four obstacles in order to return to the human world.”

“What!? PRINCE!?!” exclaimed Sharlet. “Yes, I am sorry I did not tell you earlier, but I was stunned by your stupidness,” said Tom.  “Sorry, but I had to get to the other side of the forest to get to Castle Enchantment,” said Sharlet.

“Haha.  You think this is your last obstacle? Well then, I better go with you to the Maze of Truth.  You’re gonna need me,” said Tom.  “The Maze of Truth is an hour away, so we better get walking,” said Main.  So for an hour they listened to the two headed troll whine about the length of the journey until their heads spun and they arrived at the Maze of Truth.

“Be careful when you enter the maze.  You will have to face the real you in order to exit.  If you cannot, you will be removed from history,” warned Tom.

Sharlet stepped into the yellow colored maze and she saw the entrance slowly vanish behind her.  “Typical!” grumbled Sharlet, and then she saw an image up ahead. She slowly walked through a labyrinth of golden walls toward a glowing orb and saw herself inside of it - it was like a movie of all her actions from the past.  She watched the movie, looked at her real self, and froze.  She was mean!

She was pulling her little sister’s hair until she cried.  She was calling kids at school names until they burst into tears.  Then there was just the fact that she was always getting into fights and losing friends.  This was her.  Sharlet was stunned and It seemed as if she was disappearing.  She felt so hot and ashamed and then she screamed, “I Know how mean I am!  As soon as I get out of this maze I am going to change my ways and change the real me!”

In an instant, she was outside of the maze looking at a cave.  She had done it!  She made it through the Maze of Truth without being erased from history.   Sharlet wondered where everyone else was.  One after another, her guides popped out of the maze and landed on the ground at her feet.  They too had managed to escape.  Each one stood up and congratulated her, but not for long because they had the Cave of You’re Not Good Enough to tackle

“Well, Nick and Rick know the most about this cave,” said Sun “Yes, indeed.  This cave will try to tell you lies about how you look and how you do things.  The lies can lead you down the wrong path, so you best avoid listening to any mysterious voices,”  warned Nick.

So, like always, they entered the cave one at a time, and as they entered the entrance vanished.  Sharlet was always the first one in.  She found the cave to be pitch black.  She crept carefully forward in the blackness, and this went on for about 10 minutes until she heard a voice.

The voice whispered, “You’re not very brave.  You don’t know what you’re doing.  Follow me and I will help you.”  Sharlet remembered Nick’s advice.  She knew she was brave and smart.  She could figure this out on her own. Instead of listening to the voice, Sharlet walked the other way away from the voice, and as soon as she did, she was walking out of the cave.  She and the group were standing up to their necks in black water.

“Okay, I am guessing this is Lake Anger, right?” joked Sharlet. “Very funny.  You’re a clown.  Now listen to me - you need to dive under the water and swim until you overcome the anger of the Lake, then and only then, will you appear in Castle Enchantment,” instructed Sun  “What about you guys?” wondered Sharlet.  “This is something you have to do on your own,” said Tom.  Before sharlet could protest someone pushed her down into the black water.

Once she was under the water, she felt as if she was mad at everything, like her friends not saying goodbye and just pushing her aside like a piece of junk.  Then Sharlet remembered that she could not get out if she did not control her temper.

She counted to ten and took three deep breaths of the mystical black water to calm down.  Just then, she popped up out of the water and was standing dry as could be in front of Castle Enchantment.  This place was the most beautiful place Sharlet had ever seen in her life.

A lady stepped out to greet her, “Hello Sharlet.  My name is Princess Meamora, and I am guessing you need to get out of Universe Lake Beauty and return to your human world.”  Before Sharlet could answer, Meamora spoke again, “No time for talking.   To save my universe and return to your world, you have to answer this riddle: What have you learned on this journey?” rushed Meamora.  Sharlet thought about her adventures through the Forest of Fears, the Maze of Truth, the Cave of You’re Not Good Enough, and Lake Anger, and then she answered.

“In the Forest of Fears I learned that sometimes you need help.  I also learned that if you let your fears overtake you, then you will be weak.  In the Maze of Truth I learned that I have been very mean in the past and I am ready to change.  In the Cave of You’re not Good Enough I learned not to let people get me down.  I also learned that I am very brave and smart.  In Anger Lake I learned how to control my temper and accept what I cannot change.”

“You have learned a lot on your journey.  You have passed the test in time to save our universe from destruction, and now you may return to your human world.  When you wake, remember the lessons you learned on your adventures here.  Now farewell my human friend.”  Princess Meomora threw some sparkling dust in the air and waved goodbye.

Then Sharlet woke up in her bed, in her house, with the noises of her family all around her.  She had done it!  The dream universe was safe and so was she.  Sharlet would miss her friends, but they all needed to live happily ever after.

Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month.  In light of this, and because I'm learning about the American Revolution this year, my Mom had me read these two books.  I liked them both.  I cannot pick a favorite.

For my assignment, I had to pick 5 of the women featured in the books and do poster reports on them, highlighting 5 facts about each woman.  Here are my posters:

The Nancy Hart State Park in Georgia is only a little over an hour away from our house, so we are going to have a field trip soon.  At the park is a replica of the cabin where she shot the British soldiers.

I hope I can be brave and courageous in my life, like these women were in their lives.  The saying goes,  "Well behaved women never make history."  I'll try to make good choices in my life, but not necessarily do what others think I should do . . . because being ladylike stinks.  (Direct quote.)

Library Clubs

Last week I went to my library clubs again and had a lot of fun.   Here's what I did...

Jewelry Club

In Jewelry Club we learned and practiced the ladder stitch, and it was harder than it looked.   Now that I have a jewelry business, I had to get some supplies, so I spent forty dollars of my own money on my own supplies.  Since then, I have made my Grandma and Mom some gorgeous earrings.  

Ick Club

In Ick Club we played two games.  One was we picked an animal out of a card pile and learned how to use the book search to find a book on our animals, and to find out if they are rodents or not.  My card said mice and rats, and I found two books, one for each.   Both mice and rats are rodents. The other game was Gopher Guts (a memory game).  We had to match cards of different internal parts (like guts) with cards of the external animal, but if we got the spoon we had to turn our backs while someone mixed up the cards.

Book Club

For Book Club we had to read any Magic Treehouse book, then we had to have a good time and create a story diagram using our imaginations.  I read the 10th book in the series, which is called, Ghost Town at Sundown, and this is how my story diagram turned out. What do you think?

The main characters of the story are Jack and Annie.  The genre is fiction.  The problem is they have a riddle to answer.  The solution is they find the answer: echo.  In the beginning of the story they are transported to the Wild West.  In the middle of the story they help Slim, a cowboy, get a little colt back to its mother.  At the end of the story they find the answer to their riddle when Slim calls out, "Who am I?" and the echo answers, "Am I."

The Story That Must Be Told

 Last Monday, March 11, I had my tonsils and adenoids removed.  They were causing me some trouble . . . like frequent strep throat, loud snoring, sleep apnea, lots of mucus, and dragon breath.  The doctor took one look at them (they were huge!) and said I definitely qualified for removal.

This was my waiting and dressing room for the morning.  I had a TV that I could move around!  The nurse put numbing cream on my hands.  After a few trips to the bathroom we were off to THE BED, where the nurses and the doctor would get me ready for: The Deed That Must Be Done.  

It was almost time.   I was in the bed of doom and the nurses had given me THE HAT and asked me many questions.  They calmed me down a bit, but I was still having a nervous breakdown.  Then I said, in my head, "O.K., I am going to make a run for it!"  But then the wheels started to turn and I had no chance of escaping.  When we got to the surgical room, the lights were bright and the nurses asked me to move onto the surgical bed.   Then the nurse gave me steaming hot blankets and some laughing gas.  And the next thing I knew, I was aslee....        

I woke up and my mouth was in indescribable pain!  My mom was by my side and the nurse was on the computer.   Then I asked the nurse if she could give some pain medication, so she gave me a popsicle and some stuff through my I.V.
  

We had to say at the hospital for four hours after surgery.   The whole time,  I got to be queen of the hospital, with unlimited popsicles and apple juice.  I got to watch TV - which was awesome -  and I got to leave in a wheelchair.  Even more awesome.

I was welcomed home with presents and hugs and TV.  I was going to be Queen Eva for a week.   I got an ice cream maker from my Uncle Sean and Aunt Amber, which was awesome, and many more gifts after that.  Thank you everyone for the rad presents.

 

O.K.,  first, any cooking magazines who want this picture, just leave a comment and I will get back to you.  This is the ice cream we made with the ice cream maker.  We combined my two favorite flavors: coconut and chocolate.  There are only four ingredients: 1 can of full-fat coconut milk, 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of dark cocoa powder, 1/4 cup honey, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.  

My mom made me soft foods that I could eat, like cake, and I helped clean up.

To top off my week, I was watching TV and wiggling my tooth, when suddenly it flew forward and came out!  So, Queen of the Week, also got a vist from the Tooth Fairy.

The End.  I am almost fully recovered and going to Disney World in a couple weeks!  Bye.

Read . . . Read . . . Read . . . Read!  Owwww - my head hurts because there is too much knowledge in it.

I spent the last couple of weeks reading these books.  I will list them in order of my most favorite to my least favorite.  But you should know that I liked them all:

Swordbird by Nancy Yi Fan.  The author began writing this book when she was 10 years old!  Amazing.  If you like action, you will like this story.

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat by Lynne Jonell.  If you like fun and magic, you will like this story!

Runt by Marion Dane Bauer.  If you like miracles and rising above adversity, you will like this story!

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia.  If you like historical fiction and drama - or if you want to know more about the Black Panthers or the Civil Rights Movement - you will like this story!

My Mom took me out to lunch and let me give verbal reports on these books, instead of writing, writing, writing, writing.  She says that learning how to talk about books is just as important as learning how to write about books.  I only got a C on my verbal reports, because I was more interested in my cheeseburger and milkshake than talking with my Mom about the books.  My Mom says we are going to have to work on this.

I am busy reading many more books, trying to stuff my head with more knowledge.

How To Make Doggy Treats

I just got a dog and his name is Lucky.  We got him on Saturday.   I had been on Petfinder for weeks, and was running low on hope of finding the perfect dog.  I found this cute Shih tzu, and my Dad drove me an hour to see it.  After our introduction, it tried to bite me.  Fail.

I was sad, so my whole family went to Petsmart.  We saw two dogs that we loved immediately - Lucky and Teddy.  Lucky won the battle of "May the best dog win!"  He had been at the Humane Society since October, and they were getting ready to kill him.  He was priced at $25 to save his life.  So, that's how we got him.

I wanted to make treats for him, and my Mom said I could if I wrote a how-to paper.  So here we go . . .

To make these treats for your dog you need:

1/2 cup of pumpkin puree

4T of molasses

4T of H2O

2T of vegetable oil

2 cups whole wheat flour

1/4t b. soda

1/4t b. powder

1t of cinnamon

• Pre- heat the oven to 350.
• Mix all the wet ingredients together.

• Add the dry ingredients and mix them into the wet ingredients the best you can with a spoon.  The dough will be very dry, so you will probably have to use your hands to knead everything together at the end.  

• Grease a cookie sheet with Pam.
• Use a half tablespoon to measure out the dough.  Roll each half tablespoon into a ball.  Put it on the cookie sheet and flatten with a fork.  

• Once the cookie sheet is full, place it in the oven and bake for 25 minutes.  Don't forget to set a timer.
• When the timer goes off, use pot holders to take out the cookie sheet and place it on a cooling rack or surface.  WARNING: Do not put it on your mother's wood table!
• Let the biscuits cool, then make your dog do a trick to earn his treat.

The results?

Delicious dog treats for your dog to enjoy. You can eat some too, but they will not be sweet.  If you have any other ideas for dog treats, please leave it in your comment.

Disney World Favorite Rides

As you know - if you read my blog regularly - I just went to Disney World.  Of course my Mom tried to get a couple of assignments out of this vacation.  I hope this is the last one!  She asked me to describe my top three rides at the four parks we visited.  Torture!

Animal Kingdom

1.  Mount Everest

This is my favorite ride; it is a model of Mount Everest, so you get to go up high hills. The ride is boring at first, but then you come to a torn up track where all of a sudden you fly backwards into a dark tunnel. Then you come to an ice cave.  It is a little cold inside.  You see the Yeti's shadow as he tears up a track, then you fly forward and make a run for it.

2.  It's Tough to be a Bug

This is a fun 4-D movie that has you use all your senses. You watch as different bugs are interviewed, and when they interview the stink-bug it stinks up the room.   Then the evil cricket comes in and tries to exterminate you and you can feel the extermination liquid sprayed all over the audience. Then at the end, they have a surprise for you.  All the bugs and maggots exit first and you can feel them crawl under your legs.

3.  Safari Tour

On this ride you go in to an animal reserve while riding in a jungle cruiser. There are three different habitats with different endangered animals. We even spotted lions, and the male was having a bad hair day.

Magic Kingdom 

1.  Space Mountain

This ride takes you into deep space.  You launch into the stars and jolt up, down, and all around!  The "spaceship” takes you to three different places in space.  The best thing is that you can't see the track, but the stars glow, and because it is dark you our surprised by jolts on the track.

2.  Thunder Mountain Railroad

This ride is more jolty than fast.  The first part is really noisy because there are bats in the cave that you start in. You zoom through old mine tracks, one town, and a gyser farm.  This is definitely one ride worth screaming on!

3.  Haunted Mansion 

THIS will give you nightmares!  It's best to go through the graveyard, it passes time and is really fun.  You enter a small room and meet your ghost tour guide;  then you get in your car. Then you go through different rooms and meet all the ghosts in the Disney Word Haunted Mansion.  

Epcot

1.  Soarin'

This is a good ride; it's like a 4-D movie, but way different.  The line is huge so get a fastpass.   When you finally get into your seat you go on an airplane ride. This ride has you use your eyes and your nose.  For example, you fly through an orange grove and the air smells like oranges; you fly down a river in the forest and the air smells like a wet forest.

2.  Mission Space

This ride has warnings everywhere, so if you have a lot of motion sickness STAY OFF THIS RIDE!  In this ride you are heading to Mars in a spaceship.  There are four positions in the spaceship, each has two buttons that need to be pressed when they light up.  If you need to throw-up, then do not worry, there are throw-up bags in the ship.

3.  Test Track

In this ride you design your own car and test it.  You test it for 4 things.  My favorite thing is speed, because you zoom around outside.  If you do not want to design a car then it's o.k., you do not have to, the ride will assign you a car.

Hollywood Studios

1.  Rockin' Rollercoaster

This ride so cool, it is a must go on ride!  But get a fastpass. On this ride you have V.I.P. passes to a rock concert, and you have to get there on time. This was my first loopy rollercoaster and it was my my brothers too. There is loud rock music playing in your eardrums and your head bumps around in the headrest – so you may leave with a headache.

2.  Tower of Terror 

I suggest if you have children that you only take at least a seven-year-old and up because younger children may cry.  On this ride you go in to different rooms, that are almost pitch black, then all of a sudden you fall.   It is a terrifying ride!   Here is a picture for proof... let me point out that my brother has his eyes closed, we have one tear face, and one hug . . . so maybe don't take your kids.

3.Fantasia

This is not really a ride, it's more like a play.  Its really good, they even set the water on fire. Do not worry, it's perfectly safe.  It is story about Mickey's imagination and the good and evil in it.  It is a great rest stop, and a way for the ride times to die down.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

To remember Dr. Martin Luther King, my Mom and I researched and read his most famous quotes.  We also watched his "I Have a Dream" speech, and a mini-biography about his life.  My Mom chose five of her favorites quotes from him, and I had to write 3-5 sentences about what they mean to me.  Here's what he had to say, and what I have to say about what he had to say:


The time is always right to do what is right.
What Dr. King is saying is that when you see something that needs to be fixed, do it - not tomorrow . . . NOW!   So, if you need to clean, go and get it over with. Speaking of which, have I cleaned my room yet?

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”
O.K., Dr. King, you got me here . . . but here it goes. You're saying that we always need to think about this to make the world a better place, where everyone is treated right.  That is a pretty good guess, if you ask me.  

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.
What Dr. King is saying is that when you do something that takes faith you do not know what is going to happen.  Faith is just a wild roller coaster built for only people who have the courage to use it.  I have a lot of faith, I just do not use it very often.  

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Dr. King is saying that if you fight hate with hate, nothing ever happens. So, we should not fight with our fists, but with our souls.  Sounds fun, but I do not think my brothers and I can do that.

In the End, we will remember not the word of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.  
In this quote Dr.King is saying that when someone sees something that they think is unfair but stay silent, it hurts a lot more than the words of our enemies.  So, if you think something is unfair DO NOT  be silent, stand up for what you believe in.

• In 1999, the U.S. Treasury paid tribute to Sacagawea by putting her picture on the golden dollar coin.
• Clark drew plants, trees, and animals, but never once sketched Sacagawea.
• There are a river, two lakes, and four mountain peaks named after Sacagawea.
• Sacagawea means bird woman.
• Sacagawea was born in modern day Idaho.
• Lewis and Clark depended on Sacagawea because she spoke several native american languages and dialects.
• Sacagawea was kidnapped by Hidatsa raiders when she was 11.
• After she was kidnapped, she was sold to a fur trader Toussaint Charbonneau, who later became her husband.
• When Sacagawea went in to labor the baby did not come out for almost 2 and a half days, until an Indian woman gave her some dried rattlesnake to hasten the birth. Ten minutes later, out came her baby boy.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I read this book for my independent reading assignment.  We went to this Harry Potter party at the library, and my favorite librarian, Ms. Natalie, suggested that I read this book.  It is amazing!  You must read it!  

My Mom gave me the assignment to create 3 fact posters about 3 of the magical beasts from the book.  Drum roll please . . .

• The female is generally larger and more aggressive than the male.
• A dragon hide, blood, heart, liver, and horns all have highly magical properties, but dragon eggs are defined as class A non-tradeable goods.
• Dragons are probably the most famous of all magical beasts.  

• The Billywig lives in Australia.
• It is half an inch long. 
• If you get stung by a Billywig one of the side effects is hovering uncontrollably.

• A fairy is a small and decorative beast of little intelligence.
• Fairies have large insect like wings which may be transparent or multi-colored, according to type.

An American Girl

 My Mom and I read two books about what it was like to live during Colonial Times.  My Mom gave me the assignment to write a book comparing what it was like to live then versus now.  Enjoy my masterpiece:

Page 1:  Hello my name is Hope, and I am truly happy to meet you.  I am a Colonial girl and I have been asked to tell you all about what my life is like.

Page 2:  Hey my name is Evalynn.  I was also asked to tell you about my life.  Well, what are we doing just standing around - on with the book.

Page 3: My education is very poor, the only school I ever went to was Dame School.  The only thing I had to do was learn how to read and write everything on the school book.  Our school book is called the New England Primer.

Page 4: My education is good; I will go all the way to college.  I am taught more than reading and writing, I am taught math and science too.  I have to go every day unless it's a holiday, the weekend, or summer.

Page 5: My dress is very plain; it is brown with a long, white apron in front.  I make most of my clothes, including the fabric.  I also cover my hair at all times.  I am either wearing a hat, hood, or kerchief.

Page 6: My dresses are fluffy, sparky, and if I do say so myself, they are out of this world.  I wear my hair down, but other girls wear their hair in ponytails.  I buy my clothes at many different stores in all sorts of colors and fabrics.

Page 7: We think it is a sin not to work, so we mostly work for the whole day.  Even though we work most of the time, we always find time to play.  Some of the games we play are Tag and Blindman's Buff.  We also sing Here we Go Round the Mulberry Bush and London Bridge is Falling Down.

Page 8: I do not have many chores; all I have to do is clean up my room and bathroom, and that's only on the weekend.  I like to make up fun games that are like a chapter book.  When I am not outside, I am usually watching TV or playing a game on an electronic device.

Page 9:  I mostly eat corn, pumpkin, and squash.  My father and brother go fishing for clams, lobsters and many kinds of fish.  My mom and I always cook the food, and we always take some and smoke it to save for winter.

Page 10:  I do not live on a farm, so I buy my food at the supermarket.  Sometimes as a special treat I get artificial junk that tastes delicious to my taste buds . . . candy!  Most of the time we eat fresh fruit and vegetables, grain, dairy, and meat.  We store our fresh foods in a refrigerator.

Page 11: My house only has one room plus an attic.  We do everything in that one room:  cooking, sleeping, and working.  There is only one chair in the house and it belongs to my father; no one else is allowed to sit in it.

Page 12:  My home has many rooms for many things.  It's warm in the winter time and cool in the summer time.  My home has many pieces of furniture for everyone to share.  It is decorated with art and objects from around the world.


I am so glad I live now instead of during Colonial Times!  I do not want to have to work all day and wear ugly dresses.

Sarah Bishop Timeline and Character Analysis

My Mom and I read this book together.  It is about a young girl, named Sarah Bishop, who lives in New England during the American Revolution.  It is a great book and I highly recommend it.  Sarah has a crazy life, filled with tragedy and adventure.  To capture this, my Mom gave me the assignment to create a timeline of the main events in the story.  Then I was suppose to identify three traits in Sarah that I admire and support them with details from the story.  Here is my assignment:

Sarah Bishop's Timeline

• Her brother Chad became a patriot soldier.
• Her father was killed by the Sons of Liberty because he was a loyalist.
• She was accused of starting a fire that she do not start.
• Her brother Chad died on a war ship.
• She escaped from the Redcoats and became a wanted woman.
• She escaped from Sam Goshen, a man who wanted to do her harm.
• She moved into a cave on Long Pond.
• She fought off an Indian that wanted her out of Long Pond.
• She was accused of witchcraft by witch hunters.
• She went to trial and was found not guilty of witchcraft.

I think Sarah Bishop is brave because... She was accused of starting a fire she did not start, then she away ran from the Redcoats to live in a cave by herself. She was bitten by a copperhead and survived the bite. She was accused of witchcraft and actually went to to defend herself at the trial.

I think Sarah Bishop is intelligent because... She made a cave into a decent home. She survived on her own in the wilderness. She made almost everything she had in her cave by herself.

I think Sarah Bishop is strong because... She is not afraid to use her musket if someone would cause her harm. She fought off an Indian from her home. She found a way to live in peace even knowing that everyone in her family is dead.

Mini Book Review: Astronomy - Out of This World

My friends, The Arnolds, gave me this book.  I finished reading it today and I think it is A-Mazing!  Here are five things I liked about this book:
1.  The detailed and descriptive pictures.  The pictures turn the planets and other space objects into cartoon people.
2.  The descriptive and interesting facts.  The author told me a lot of information in a short format.  I didn't have to read a whole lot of things I wasn't interested in to get to the good parts.
3.  That the text is written in first-person.  Each of the space objects tell about themselves.
4.  The pull-out poster included in the back of the book.  I like that the poster shows me exactly where all of the space objects are located in our Solar System.
5.  The future predictions about our Solar System and The Universe.  I'm especially interested in learning more about space travel.

I totally recommend this book!
